sleep on beneath a long night moon
a story gathers hungry, bright and lean

weaving a will into a wisp
don’t wonder where the trail of crumbs is going
just follow where it leads

dreams catch the shadows on the wall
with pictures hanging heavy, soft and sweet

stealing a cookie from the jar
it might be wrong, though things belong wherever
there lies sufficient need

the night is endless, throwing open the door
you lit the lantern, wander down the haunted road hunting more

seek out a message in the flames
to understand first be prepared to bleed

eat up a belly full of stones
a counterweight of words can only carry
whatever’s matched in deed

the morning birds already making their calls
the moon is sinking, turn the latch on the door
blow out the candle, wipe the face from the wall
the trail of crumbs has vanished from where it lay just before
